Ajay , this word was coined by none other than Mahatma Gandhi. He called them people of the Lord. (Harijan). As a rhyme, he must have called the tribe as 'Girijan'.
Hari is a name of Lord Krishna. I did a survey of many slums in Coimbatore a year back and found that all the Harijans are Vaishnavites (at least in Tamilnadu) . The Sakkiliyar, Pallar, Parayar etc all adorn the tri pundaram (the Vedic U shaped tilak) in their forehead during festivals. The Alwar Bhakti movement of Sixth century has reached them also.
So, my calling them Harijans is apt to the core.
