Precisely because DALIT means 'pressed down" and they are OPPRESSED. By using the term SCHEDULED CASTES this reality is glossed over. Thus language is used to stop bringing up an uncomfortable issue. That is why the Government opposed the inclusion of this practice of untouchability as a modern form of slavery at international forums because by accepting that in reality it is a form of slavery, a very virulent form, it would have to do something about it. All governments do that - to use euphemisms that prevent people from seeing the reality. So civil society groups MUST continue to call a spade a spade....lest language is used to cover a multitude of sins and evils. Josantony Joseph Rashmi Ekka wrote: Venkat, SC is a legal term.
