ALL INDIA DEMOCRATIC WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION 121, Vithal Bhai Patel House, Rafi Marg, New Delhi 110 001 Tel: 011-23710476/email: aidwacec@gmail.com 16th October 2008 AIDWA CONDEMNS DISMISSAL OF JET EMPLOYEES The Central Executive Committee of the All India Democratic Women's Association, presently in session at Kolkata strongly condemns the arbitrary dismissal of 1900 employees of Jet Airways. Once again women are bearing the brunt of the job cuts which are seen by these private airlines as a means of staying profitable in these times of financial crisis. Many of the dismissed probationers are young women from economically insecure families who have borrowed large amounts of money in order to train themselves qualify for these jobs. This was touted as one of the success stories of the policies of liberalization and privatization vigorously pursued in our country. The hire and fire policy of the private sector that has been blindly promoted by the government in the name of flexible labour policies, and the active discouragement of unions that protect the interests of employees have contributed to this situation. We demand that the dismissed employees should be reinstated, and the government amends labour laws to prevent such arbitrary dismissal in the future. While expressing solidarity with the dismissed employees, we also call upon them to unitedly fight for their rights as working people of this country.
