There are holes in this article than in a Swiss Cheese. The author says,"Repression of and discrimination against minorities is as old as recorded history itself. " But India really had no concept of minority, majority. The indian society was all inclusive and religion was not a marker. Thus you had jains, parsees, christian, muslims etc being an important part of society. The author says,"'Historically, most conversions in India, from the ranks of the economically poorest and socially most defenseless Hindus" Not really. The syrian christians of kerala are actually proud of their brahmin background and very caste conscious. The author also does not mention that many were converted by force eg in Goan inquisition and allurement. In many cases it was a convert or die situation -- they had no choice The author states, "Article 18 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) explicitly states that everyone has the right to freedom of thought" The author does not mention that many conversions are done by inducements and coercions. Further no universal declaration of human rights condone denigration of any faith that is very common for missionaries to indulge in.
The author says,"Dignity is a basic human right and if this is denied by one set of beliefs, then the victim " The position of the dalits does not change much even if he converts to christianity. Recently some 2,000 dalits christian returned to the Hindu fold. Check out why chinaaid.org/2008/05/17/india-1000-dalit-christians-reconvert-to-hinduism/ The author says,"It is necessary to remind ourselves about the India Mahatma Gandhi dreamt of. He said," What the author says is he was against missionary activities and had mentione he would ban it if he could. Here is the link about his thougthts on missionaries Mahatma Gandhi on conversions stephen-knapp.com/mahatma_gandhi_on_conversion.htm sri venkat
