HANDIA is a part of life and culture of ADIBASI in the villages and
is used in all rituals like worshiping, festivals, marriages and
deaths.It has been used for centuries by their ancestors and there is
nothing wrong with this.
BUT the problem is that now a days it is used all the time and has
become an addiction to many poor Adibasi people. It has affected
their health and well being and trapped them in the poverty trap and
neglected their families. This has also led to their early deaths.
WE all know and understand this but none of has time to do anything
for them.
POLITICIANS have the clout and resources but they will not raise this
issue as it might offend the ADIBASI people and loose votes and
source of their income.
In my long personal experience and view use of HANDIA needs to be
regulated and used only on special occasions.
EDUCATION. Most of ADIBASI people are still uneducated and illiterate
and have no idea of the addictive nature of this drink and its affect
on them.There is an evidence that most of the educated ADIBASI
families has less likely to have such problems and they have made
some progress in all aspects of developments. SO EDUCATION IS MOST
IMPORTANT TOOL TO FIGHT THIS.
Apart from this, they obviously need job opportunities and access to
better health care, education, housing, clean drinking water,
respect, dignity and empowerment.
