This is a loaded question. 1. The history of a nation must be known to its subjects 2. The past cruelties or niceties both must be presented to its youngsters in a matter of fact manner 3. No lie must be told to our children 4.In case of a violent past, the victim must be given the freedom to FORGIVE but never to FORGET.
The average Indian child must know what sort of violence has been unleashed on its forefathers. To conceal history is cruelty.
Take the case of the Harijan. He knows the history of sufferings of his forefathers and never FORGETS that. He has the freedom to forgive.
You may ask why I am so particular . I grew up in a town on the foothills of Nilgiris with a 25 % Muslim population . Most of my childhood friends were muslims. I noticed that during my high school days, the muslim students will never sing the national anthem properly and insert vulgar words in between and it used to go unheard in the chorus. I was surprised and angered at their action.
But what outraged me was when , Imam Ali, a most dreaded terrorist, wanted in all the violent acts of Tamilnadu, was apprehended in my town. But to cap it all, when he was lodged in the police station, a mob of 2000 people, half of them women, gheroed the station. By this time, I had known the past acts of muslim rulers though my textbooks never revealed this. My time in the library clearly brought to light why they did it.
Most Indians never know of Wahabbism. About 130 years ago, a 70,000 strong muslim force came attacking India, to overrun the british and Hindu rulers and establish the Caliphate . The British crushed it. But the wahabbism has never died out from the minds of the sunni population. Pakistan was the result of that. Now Kashmir is on the line. Bengal may be next.
If you do not know history you will never know what to anticipate. My maths teacher told me this. A problem well defined is a problem half solved.
