Dear Manas, Thanks for your mail describing in detail about the caste system. I too feel, we can discuss in parts over a period of time rather dumping everything in one mail. Let me first introduce how and why i came in to some study on caste system. Till the end of my college life, the only thing i know about caste system is what i studied in syllabus.. Personally, i just know what my gula name was.. Then after the college, when i started going to various functions, and interacting with many tamil scholars from my community, i found lot of things that i havent known before.. Then atlast i came across Gurumurthy's article about Dharampal, and that Caste system was NOT bad and it was the strength of india. Then i started dwelling deep in to my own caste, and found lot of historical evidence.. I was also faced with a dilemma over whether to pursue caste system or to go against it.. Caste come to preference when a person attains marriage age.. in our caste system, persons belonging to same gulam are brothers and sisters.. and we could marry only from other gulams (sub-sects).. now the question arises.. if i abandon caste system, can i marry a person belonging to the same gula? I could not even think of, as it amounts to marrying our sister.. If i have to follow caste system, then am i going to do anything wrong? I found that following my jaati culture had nothing to do with higher caste or lower caste.. rather, it was more of following rituals and customs, that form part of our life.. we used to go to our gula temple once in a year... apart from that, all persons belonging to a sub-sect would come together and conduct festivals in our gula temple.. So, i finally decided, to follow my caste system and started studying more about historic lineage.. I found lot of interesting things from that.. one of that i found is one of the statue in our gula deivam is a person who once belonged to a caste that's now classified as SC.. he had an important place in our epic and said to be closest gaurd of the main god.. I will describe other details more in my next mail... Regards, Senthil ------------------------------------
