It  is very  easy for Mr. Prem Shankar Jha or  for Mr.Chatterjee as to what Mr.   Ratan Tata  sjhould have offered to  Farmers  in  Singur so as to satisfy them or Ms. Mamta Banerjee.
For speedy industrial development, land has to be provided by the State Govt.  A choice has to be made  by the state and the policy makers and politicians as to whether they would like to continue with  non sustainable agriculture or to go for  speedy industrialization. In the latter case,  the  moot questions  arises as to its  impact on agriculture and how to rehabilitate the displaced farmers/ agri.  labourers whose land is being acquired. The foremost need is that the good/ irrigated cultivable land should not be diverted for industrial development. India  is otherwise having large tracks of waste land/ unirrigated land  on which cultivation  per se is non sustainable. For  indus. development,only such land  should be acquired. Also, atleast one person from each displaced family should be provided  employment and should have long term profit sharing with the industrial project.  It was not only for  Mr.  Tata to suggest various  alternatives  for rehabilitation of displaced farmers: equal responsibility  lies on Ms. Banerjee and the state  administration to offer various alternatives. It is the job of the State administration to create conducive climate  for industrial development. While Tatas would be incurring losses  in  shifting  the whole plant  to a  new site, ie Gujarat and the money  spent on the site development, West Bengal  and its people have lost the whole project and its long term  enduring benefits  in the fight for political supremacy. It is a sad day  for the state of WB
