Cynthia, From what I see in your writing, you must be a third generation or fourth generation christian and you look at the present conversions from your own prism. This has its own defects.
You know, the Tamil bible is called ' Holy Vedagamam' (Punita Vedagamam)
The Agamas are the presiding doctrines of Hinduism especially in South India after the close of the Vedic era but their ethos are largely Vedic except that temple worship was adapted in place of Vedic Yagya.
The sixteenth - seventeenth century translators of bible saw that the Vedagama is very apt to 'present' it to agamic hindus. Thus the name.
The ideological conversion is accepted and I will forcefuly vouch for it. But, I look at the emotional conversion (like the one you described above) and commercial conversion (Orissa) with all the contempt they deserve.
