Indeed you are right. There can be no question of `merit' being rewarded when the vast majotity are denied the opportunity to develope their talents. The only solution to this problem, and it is the only one that has worked world-wide in countries even with different systems, and that is the neighbourhood common school in which all children learn together and contribute to each others varied skills. In a highly inequal society like India, an added requirement is to provide free uniforms, textbooks and meals to all children so that they can be in a position to learn to their fullest capacity and parents are not forced to put them to labour. Does it sound like its too much investment? We are a poor country we are always told. But tell me, is it too much to invest in our future generations? It is certainly less than the handouts being given for urban developement, luxury lifestyles, tax holidays for corporates and SEZ's. Just think of the changes it will bring about!
