Hi, One of the main reason why agriculture declined was that the farmers power were unsurped by the britishers, which even the independant india continued. If we analyse the social setup of the rural india, the entire life cycle is self-sufficient. The farmers cultivated food plants, which they used for their survival. All other communities associated received a share of the harvest, and hence they also had a means of survival. I would like to explain the situation that existed in my village in tamilnadu. I came from agricultural background, and every year january would be harvest season. I remember my childhood, where my grandfather and father would be giving away a fixed amount of paddy harvest to different sections of the society in our village. To recall my memory, the following are the communities that received the share. -> Pot making family -> Barber family -> carpenter families -> blacksmith families -> Washer man families -> cobbler families These communities received this share based on some historical arrangements every year. Apart from that, the labourers working on the field will get their wages in terms of the share of the harvest. Like 6 vallams of paddy per day or per harvest (i dont remember exactly).. 1 vallam amounts to 5 kgs of paddy.. In this traditional setup, there was no financial burden both on the farmers and other communities. Even though there was no money rotation, all sections of the people did not suffer from hunger during good seasons. And infact, this is the reason, why the statement "There was no beggars in pre-british india" is very true.. But after 1990's, due to the mindless advent of globalisation, the entire structure of traditional setup got collapsed, and everyone started cultivating for money.. THis became the root cause of the problem, and it made everyone greedy.. both the farmers and the farm labourers. Before that, the farmers gave a share of the produce and the labourers also was aware of the total produce and their share.. But when money became the benchmark, the situation changed.. The next reason is the so called green revolution.. Infact, it is to be termed as poisonous revolution.. Due to the pressure from america, and due to ignorance of our own people, scores of healthy land were applied of fertilisers and pesticides.. In the initial years, the yield was plentiful.. But as the land started decaying the produce dropped, the fertiliser input raised, and so the pesticide inputs raised.. and atlast the debt of the farmers increased... If we really want to strengthen our agriculture, give the power to the farmers to manage themselves.. Currently the old british imperialist model of seeking everything from government exists.. Also, many of the imperialistic acts are to be abolished.. For example, consider the way the government takes over the land.. They do this using "Land Acquisition Act of 1982".. Imagine, an imperialistic law passed by the britishers to take over native lands at their will is still maintained .. Does this indicate we are an independant nation? Are we really dignified indians, who do not even have the will to abolish the imperialistic acts.. Rather, our so called freedom fighters inherited those acts..
