Dear Dr.Sharma, Wile dealing with the problems of Indian agriculture, the attitude of farmers towards farming has not been correctively perceived by the planners. Through a system of input subsidies and price support the farmer's interest is kept alive for achieving production targets set on an annual basis. But, the likely change in the attitude of farmers towards their traditional profession once the subsidies and other benefits are withdrawn or reduced has not been studied. Even among the traditional farming communities there is a general apathy towards farming. The profession does not enjoy social status and, consequently, the younger generation is not attracted towards farming. The profession is also not considered as rewarding as that of non-farm activities. Unless a change in the attitude of farmers is created it is difficult to sustain the interest of the farming communities in their traditional occupation. The farmers may evince more interest in deriving benefits from the government than in achieving higher productivity with a competitive spirit. The role of farmer's organizations is vital in creating the desired change in the outlook of the farmers. It is a fact that these organizations have made the farmers conscious of their rights and privileges only and not responsibilities. While fighting for the cause of the farmers, local and national, it would augur well for the country if such organizations strive to change the outlook of the farmers towards achieving higher production and productivity from their holdings without damaging the ecological base of farming. When farming is transformed in to a viable economic activity, not only the social status of farmers and farming will be enhanced but the agro-based rural economy of the country will also get stabilized.
