Of course our friend has no idea about Bagun Sambrui! Nor about many people who practice polygamy in government jobs and projects. Meet Satyapal Singh Yadav, and you meet the quentessential Aya Ram Gaya Ram. His political career began with the Jana Sangh. Failure to win an assembly seat launched him on the defection path - from the Bharatiya Lok Dal to the Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party to the Janwadi Congress to the Democratic Socialist Party to the Congress for Democracy to finally the Janata Party in 1977. Having finally secured a foothold in the UP Vidhan Sabha, he joined hands with Charan Singh who split in the Janata Party to join the Lok Dal in 1979. Fed up with the Lok Dal too, he jumped on to the Congress bandwagon, only to abandon it for VP Singh's Janata Dal followed by Ajit Singh's Janata Dal-A and the Congress again. This time, by default when Ajit Singh joined hands with P V Narasimha Rao. Between 1996 and 1999, his political somersaults have taken him from the Samajwadi Party and the BJP. Last heard, he lost the UP polls to the SP candidate. His career graph? Yadav has been an MP twice and has represented the assembly five times in his 38-year political career straddling so many parties. Is Yadav the odd man out? There is no dearth of his ilk. Meet Shivanand Tiwari. He began as a Laloo loyalist in the early 1990s, switched loyalties to Nitish Kumar, became a petitioner in the fodder scam case, did a complete U-turn and sneaked back into the Laloo camp to become his main defender. Currently, he is a minister in the Rabri government. And then, there is Bagan Sumbrai, the archetypal horse-trader from Jharkhand's political bank. The septuagenarian, bare-chested tribal stalwart from Chaibasa in Bagun Sumbrai hasn't only changed his bride 25 times but also political labels umpteen times. Having jumped into the political arena in 1967, the Jharkhand Party MLA has been a member of the Congress, the Janata Party, the Samajwadi Party, the JMM and the BJP. When power and money become the prime objectives, defections naturally become the name of the political game. And like all sport, there are a few unbroken rules of this game too. A day before Mayawati withdrew support to the Kalyan Singh government in 1997, Kalyan's emissary went to the residence of senior Congress MLA Surendra Nath Awasthi with two huge suitcases. His offer: Rs 1 crore to anyone who was willing to defect from the Congress. The plan was, however, scuttled by Congress stalwart Jitendra Prasada. Crorepati dreams carried stealthily in a suitcase are not the only precipitating factors. Political horse-traders flash another trump card too. Naresh Agarwal, UP's veteran wheeler-dealer, reportedly held closed-door meetings with Kalyan Singh in 1997 and pressed for 'lal battis' (ministerial berths) along with a 'bride price' of Rs. 25 lakh for all the Congress MLAs who were ready to defect in 1997. Lately, the political potboiler has been peppered with greater thrills-and-chills than the best of Bollywood make-believe. The airlifting of 'vulnerable' Congress netas to resorts, the heavy security bandobast to ward off 'poachers' from the opposition camp, the cars being swapped mid-route, cell phone cards being changed, professional detectives being hired to spy on rivals, escape from alleged captivity... the art of Aya Ram Gaya Rama — pioneered by former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal in in 1977 —is getting more and more refined. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/13099962.cms Father's Name Late Shri Manaki Sumbrui Mother's Name Late Smt.
