I have read Ajay's comments on Mr. Venkat's position. I only wonder how does it matter in names we use to refer to a phenomenon! Point is do we consider the staus ascribed as acceptable. If you refer to what Venkat calls Harijan as Dalit with the same staus ascribed it does not help. Neither Dalit nor Harijan are honourable terms in today's India where money determines status. caste is gradualyy losing ground but I suspect if the Dalit leadership wants it totally eliminated. My experiences show leares and elites of that all such social categories are hell bent upon profiting from those and these communities continue to be hegemonised by such elites. The real progressives section do not occupy important public space in the realms of oppressed politics. Apurba K Baruah
