I am enthralled ! I carry the tribal blood in me. My mother is from the Badaga community of the Nilgiris in Tamilnadu. Though not classified as a tribe by the government, they are an oppressed community who fled from Karnataka into Nilgiris fearing Muslim rape and loot.
To complete the story for the inquistive, my father is a Marathi Brahmin. To add astonishing details again, my mother has become a 100% brahmin lady . Since my father and mother are the last surviving elders in our small community here, they are given the first rights in all the family functions. My family and community has accepted her totally. My mother's side accepted my father but my father was not allowed to offer the last mouthful of rice (a custom prevalent in Tamilnadu) when my grandfather departed.
I have no qualms in identifying myself as a Badaga boy . At the same time I have no trouble with my sacred thread and my Vedic Sandhya.

But I think the separation of tribal and Hindu is superfluous. My mother was more Hindu than my father. You should go into badaga hamlets to see their devotion to Shiva and Muruga. Till today theirs is one community that has proved a hard nut to crack for the christian missionaries who were entrenched there for two centuries !
