Thank you, Dr. Walter, for the valuable information. In the late 1960s
when I started working on my Ph.D.thesis (later published as "Agrarian
Problems of Permanent Settlement-- A case study of Champaran), I read
almost all the documents and secondary works from 1765 till the abolition
of zamindari, besides literary works by Rev. Lal Behari Dey, Deenbandhu
Mitra, Bankim Chatterji and so on. I came across papers and documents
relating to Chotanagpur and Santhal Parganas. Since the problems of
Chotanagpur and S.P. did not concern me directly, I did not give much heed
to them. Much later, when I came to work on the problem of casteism (
published as Sociology and Economics of Casteism--A study of Bihar), I did
gather some materials on land alienation by the tribals to non-tribals who
became benami owners, besides politics of the area. I had frequent
discussions with Dr. K. S. Singh who was my senior at Patna College. I
think, this problem has a great bearing on the present socio-economic and
political problems of Jharkhand. Criminalisation is an outcome of these
past developments.
You must be familiar with the tricks applied by the Marwaris in North East
to marry tribal women and do business in their names. Beside maid
servants, they get ample opportunities to make money.
I shall be grateful to you, if you could give some thought to the rest of
my questions.
About Dr. Singh's papers, I shall find out from his family. His son lives
in my colony in New Delhi. I think, he had built a house in Ranchi too.
